Carmen Serrata

Dr. Carmen Serrata is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Serrata is a scholar who conducts research centerin on examining marginalized student populations’ postsecondary experiences and families’ influence along pathways to higher education. Her research explores the intersection of college access and race, immigration, and citizenship.

For over 10+ years, Carmen has served in various roles to promote college readiness and college opportunity pathways to underserved student groups. Her prior work as a college access has informed her desire to contribute to scholarship on first-generation, low-income, and underserved students and families across the P-20 pipeline.

Dr. Serrata completed a two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at UNC Charlotte with a research team in the higher education program focused on community college transfer pathways and student experiences in North Carolina, funded by the John M. Belk Endowment. Her experience in each of these areas contributes to her research agenda at UNC Charlotte, expanding her focus on Latinx students in higher education, the intersection of immigration and citizenship, and the role of families in educational pathways. Dr. Serrata teaches courses in the master’s and doctoral higher education programs, advises graduate students, serves on dissertation committees, and provides service and engagement on campus and in our local and state communities.
